Understanding the Trinity and Why it matters

Once my foundations in Islam began to crumble, I found myself in a kind of religious vacuum. I wasn’t merely questioning a few doctrines — the entire framework I had built my life upon was collapsing. For the first time, it seemed entirely plausible that religion might be nothing more than a human construct.

Yet atheism was never an option. I knew too well that the universe was not an accident. If I was going to rebuild my faith, it had to be on truth — not tradition, fear or cultural expectation. I refused to replace one falsehood with another.

God met me in that place of searching. Through my now husband, his family and their church, I encountered someone I had never truly known before: Jesus — Not the distant figure of my childhood, but the living God who sees, heals and restores. Through Him, I was born again.

But I need to be clear: for a Muslim, Christianity is a hard pill to swallow. From childhood we are taught that God cannot be a Father and cannot have a Son. God must be one person, one being with one identity. Anything else violates tawhid, the absolute oneness of God. Surah 112 — Al Ikhlāṣ — is memorised by every Muslim and includes the line:

“He does not beget, nor is He begotten”

This forms the backbone of Islamic resistance to the Christian claim that Jesus is the Son of God. So, when I first encountered Christianity, I wasn’t just wrestling with unfamiliar ideas — I was confronting concepts my entire upbringing had trained me to reject, especially since Allah NEVER enters creation.

What I didn’t realise was that Islam contains a concept that, on the surface, resembles the very Christian idea I was resisting. In classical Sunni theology, the Quran is the eternal, uncreated speech of God. Islamic tradition even teaches that the Quran will intercede for believers on the Day of Judgement as described in this Islamic blog post.

So, Islam presents a Quran that is eternal, uncreated and personified enough to intercede — a concept that echoes Christian discussions about God’s Word. But the similarity is only superficial. In Islam, Allah’s speech is simply one of His attributes, like His 99 names, not a distinct person.

This raises deeper questions... If Allah is one person, alone from eternity, then his relational names — the Merciful, the Loving, the Forgiving — only become meaningful after creation appears. In other words, Allah needs creation to express these attributes. But a God who needs creation cannot be eternally complete. He cannot be eternally loving, because love requires an object. He cannot be eternally merciful, because mercy requires someone to receive it. He cannot be eternally forgiving, because forgiveness requires a sinner.

Everything changed when I discovered Tudor Alexander’s Dance of Life podcast, especially his Trinity series. His explanations helped me grasp the nature of the true God clearly enough to finally know Him.

To summarise the Trinity briefly:

God has always existed as three eternal persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — one divine being in a tri-personal unity. This did not begin at creation; it is who God is.

The Son entered creation as Jesus Christ, taking on a human nature while remaining fully God. Even before His incarnation, the Son interacted with creation as the Angel of the Lord — the visible manifestation of God who speaks as God, receives worship as God, yet is distinct from God. Ancient Jews recognised this plurality and described it as the Two Powers in Heaven. Only with the New Testament do we see the full revelation of God as Triune, revealing the Holy Spirit as the life giver who regenerates and indwells. The Father is the invisible one who draws us to the Son through the Spirit. Together they are three persons, one God — a complex unity.

And because God exists outside space and time, He is not bound by human logic or mathematical categories that belong to creation. This is why certain aspects of Him will always remain a mystery.

So when Muslims try to force the Trinity into a mathematical box — 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 — a better analogy is this: infinity + infinity + infinity is still infinity. Three persons, one infinite being.

Analogies will always fall short because God exists beyond the physical. Yet consider a human being: body, mind and soul — distinct in function yet one unified being. Now imagine those aspects relating to one another as if they were three persons. Even this cannot fully capture God, but it helps us see why “three persons, one being” is not incoherent. It is certainly not comparable to a square circle, because God can be ONE in one way (being) and THREE in another (persons).

Unlike Allah, the Christian God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — who exists outside creation, entered creation. He stepped into time and space as Jesus Christ, fully God and fully human, two natures united in one person. Muslims often struggle to understand why this was necessary because their concept of sin is completely different. They do not view the fall in the Garden of Eden in the same way, which is why Islamic theology sees no need for a blood sacrifice for atonement.

But in Christianity, the one God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit is both truly just and truly good. Only God Himself was qualified to pay for our sins with the eternal blood of the person of the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

But what does “begotten” mean? Many Muslims assume it implies biological generation. Even some early Christians misunderstood it as eternal subordination. Yet in Christian theology, “begotten” does not refer to biological origin or inequality.

The Son has always been divine and fully equal with the Father. So, when Scripture calls Him “begotten”, it is not describing how He came into being. It is describing His unique and honoured place — the true High Priest and the “firstborn” in the sense of supreme authority and pre eminence. It is a title of identity and relationship.

This misunderstanding is also why Muhammad rejected the Christian concept of the Son. In Surah 6:101 the Qur’an says:

“How can He have a son when He has no consort?”

This assumes Christians believe God has a wife or that the Son is produced biologically — which we do not believe. It also explains why Muhammad misunderstood the Trinity as Allah, Jesus and Mary. He did not understand who the Holy Spirit is.

Many Muslims today repeat a similar misunderstanding when they claim Muhammad was prophesied in the Bible, often pointing to John 14:16. Yet the passage clearly refers to the Holy Spirit, not a human prophet:

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” - John 14:16–17 (ESV)

Ultimately, God will always remain a mystery — and rightly so. If He were easy to comprehend or fit neatly into human categories, He would not be a God worthy of worship. The true God is infinite, eternal and unbound by the limitations of space, time and human reasoning.

When I explore the problem of sin more deeply, this becomes even clearer. Sin separates us from God because God is life, so stepping away from Him leads to death. Because of the fall in the garden, humans are innately sinful, which is why it can be difficult for us to imagine how three divine persons can act in perfect unity with one will. But God is perfectly good, and each divine person shares that same goodness. Their wills are always aligned, with no sin to divide or distort them.

So as a follower of Christ, I now see that God (YHWH) is one in being but tri-personal — Father, Son (Jesus Christ) and Holy Spirit. And once you read the Bible carefully, you realise something profound: you don’t have to force the Trinity into the text — the text itself forces you toward the Trinity.

Dismantling Islam

I identified as Muslim for most of my life, but I had never examined Islam from its own sources. My belief was inherited rather than investigated. Everything changed when I began studying the Quran and Hadith directly and listening to debates by Arabic speaking Christian apologists like Christian Prince. Hearing details such as Muhammad marrying Aisha at the age of 6 and consummating the marriage at 9 confronted my own personal experience — even so it was something I could have overlooked if my investigations had found the Quran to be true. Instead, that moment became the catalyst for everything that followed.

To understand Islam, we must understand the world Muhammad was born into. Pre Islamic Arabia was religiously diverse: polytheistic tribes kept 360 idols in the Kaaba, Jews lived especially in Medina and several forms of Christianity had spread across the region. In this environment, the Quran’s content reflects stories and ideas circulating among Jews, Christians and Arabian folklore. Islam emerged in a landscape where narratives were easily blended and adapted.
So perhaps the best place to start, as a Muslim, is with the question…

Who Is Jesus in Islam?

As Muslims we often say, “We love Jesus too,” yet still believe He is only a prophet. But the Quran gives Jesus titles no other prophet receives: the Messiah, the Word of God, and a Spirit from God (Sura 4:171). These titles only have meaning in the Bible, where the Word is eternal, the Spirit is divine and the Messiah is the promised King who dies for sin and rises again.

Daniel 7:13-14 describes the Messiah as the divine Son of Man who receives worship and everlasting dominion. Jesus applies this prophecy to Himself (Matthew 26:64; Mark 14:62), which is why the Pharisees sought His crucifixion.

Yet the Quran denies the crucifixion (Sura 4:157), offering no explanation for Jesus’ sentence, no substitute and no reason why God would allow billions to believe a false event. Meanwhile, historians such as Tacitus, Josephus and Lucian confirm the crucifixion as one of the most certain events of ancient history.

The Name “ʿĪsā” and Borrowed Stories

Furthermore, when it comes to the name for Jesus in the Quran, even classical Muslim scholars acknowledge that “ʿĪsā” does not match the Hebrew Yeshua, Syriac Yeshuʿ, or Arabic Christian Yasūʿ. Studies of the Quran’s Syriac context suggest it reflects a Syriac influenced oral form circulating in Arabia at the time.

This explains why stories from Syriac and Arabic Infancy Gospels appear in the Quran — such as Jesus speaking from the cradle (Sura 19:29–30) and creating birds from clay (Sura 3:49). These apocryphal legends were popular in Arabia. The Quran even retains miracles that point to Jesus’ divine nature, especially creating life but adds “by Allah’s permission” to avoid theological conflict.

The Quran also blends biblical narratives: Moses’ marriage resembles Jacob’s story; Saul’s (Talut’s) river test mirrors Gideon’s; and Mary is called the “sister of Aaron” despite living over a thousand years later. These mix-ups show the Quran is retelling biblical stories through a patchwork of traditions rather than from Scripture.

The Islamic Dilemma

Muslims are often taught from an early stage that the Bible is corrupted. This becomes the default response to almost any objection raised against Islam or the Quran. Yet the Quran repeatedly affirms the Torah and Gospel as true and preserved:

“Let the people of the Gospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein” (Sura 5:47)
“You have no ground to stand upon unless you uphold the Torah and the Gospel…” (Sura 5:68)
“If you are in doubt… ask those who read the Scripture before you” (Sura 10:94)
“None can change His words” (Sura 6:115)

Classical scholars such as al Tabari, Ibn Kathir, al Razi and al Qurtubi confirm these verses refer to the Scriptures available in Muhammad’s time — the same Scriptures Christians have today. Archaeology (Dead Sea Scrolls, Codex Sinaiticus) confirms their preservation long before Islam.

Thus the Islamic Dilemma:

If the earlier Scriptures are trustworthy, Islam is false. If they are corrupted, the Quran is false for affirming them. Either way, the Quran is false.

Interestingly, during my journey to Christ, I also encountered a Muslim apologist named Zakir Naik. He teaches that the Bible contains genuine revelation but also human additions. Yet he argues that Jesus never made an “unequivocal, unambiguous statement” claiming to be God.

But as Christians we know there are many such statements — and one of the most compelling appears in the earliest Gospel. In Mark 2:5–12, Jesus forgives sins and the religious leaders respond “Who can forgive sins but God alone.” Jesus does something greater than claim divinity — He exercises it.

If Zakir Naik objects by claiming these passages are corrupted, then the Quran is false for affirming the Bible as preserved revelation. If they are not corrupted, then Jesus’ act of forgiving sins is an unambiguous demonstration of divinity — by the Quran’s own standard, since it teaches that only Allah forgives sins (Suras 3:135; 4:110; 39:53). Either way, the objection collapses.

Invitation

As Christians, we are called to proclaim the Gospel so that others may encounter the same grace and truth that transformed us. My intention is never to attack anyone’s beliefs, but to extend an invitation — an invitation to know the one true God and to discover the hope found in Him. My purpose is simply to be a vessel for that invitation.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” - John 3:16–17 (ESV)

Before I close, I want to leave you with two ex Muslims whose testimonies helped me navigate the emotional and spiritual challenges many Muslims face when they begin questioning their faith.

I recently watched a LIVE FREE podcast by Lakepointe Church featuring Dr Frank Turek. When engaging with people of different faiths he emphasised the importance of understanding your audience and the simplest way to do that is by asking either of the following questions:

“If Christianity were true, would you become a Christian?”
or
“If Jesus truly predicted and accomplished His resurrection from the dead to prove He was God, would you follow Him?”

I was born into a Muslim family and shaped my earliest understanding of God. My childhood wasn’t easy — I went through abuse that left me questioning how a good God could allow so much pain. As I got older, that hurt turned into rebellion and I made choices I’m not proud of particularly after I lost my mum at 17!

For years I wrestled with God, but even at my lowest I couldn’t shake the sense that something can’t come from nothing. Deep down, it was harder to believe God didn’t exist than to believe He did. Later in adulthood, things finally started to make sense as I began to see purpose woven through my pain. My search to understand Allah is what eventually led me to Jesus — something I never expected, and the journey has been anything but easy.
